Carpenter (p. 68) has him as 'A. J.,' coming to Gorham at the same time as Pairpoint in 1868.
'H. J. Barrett, who had long experience in England where he was connected with Hunt & Roskell of London, was now at Gorham. His vase on the theme of 'Ulysses defying Polyphemus' from the Odyssey represents the story in high relief showing figures of Ulysses, Boreas the wind and the blind giant Poly, phemus about to hurl a boulder. At the base are figures of water nymphs and on the handle a full relief figure of a mermaid. The remainder of the vase is covered with elaborate scrollwork in high relief' -- Katharine Morrison McClinton, Collecting American 19th Century Silver (N.Y., 1968), p. 80. McClinton's source: taken verbatim from Providence Sunday Journal 16 April 1893; article clipped in scrapbook, p. 74; line illustration of the allegorical vase.

divorced Helen; case 7374. Petition of Helen states that Bodwell 'has been guilty of the wilful desertion of the petitioner for more than five years.' She does not ask for alimony. Gorham Thurber, Lydia L. Thurber (Mrs. Bodwell's sister) and Leonard W. Bodwell give depositions. 'since their separation she has lived part of the time at my house which is her home and part of her ti me with our mother who is feeble.' 'eight years ago next fall they did separate. She went home at his request-- to visit her mother then residing at Rowley, Mass. She remained a while and he did not send for her to come back.' Bodwell dispersed the furnishings (sold some; hid some).

Leonard W. Bodwell (Sanford's brother) testifies that he is 55 years of age, 'a cutler of velvet and satins for Gorham Mfg. Co.'; confirms previous depositions.

Brandreth, Charles T.
DateEventPayAddressSource
21 Feb. 1908born, Providence, Rhode Island, son of Thomas and Mary. Parents came from Yorkshire (England) to work in the textile mills.PBR 19: 457
1924employed through the agency of Reginald Hobson, who hired at Gorham and who was a member of Brandreth's church. Because of the Depression, CTB's four-year apprenticeship extended to five and as there was no advancement for apprentices, he left.
ca. 1925Woodward asked CB to draw the top of a piece with flowers, etc. CB took the drawing to show Woodward, who asked, 'Who did this?' 'I did,' was the reply. 'You're going to the School of Design,' said the designer, and Gorham paid CB's way to night school. One year. Oscar Allebaugh was his teacher.
1925cut out letters of a trophy (CTB thinks Borg-Warner, but that wasn't made until 1936)
ca. 1926'Around 1926 the Gorham Co. would give its employees a clambake at Rocky Point every summer. There would be 4 or 5 open trolley cars waiting on Earl St. for us. They would take us to Rocky Point and we would have chowder and clamcakes at noon. We would then play game,s for prizes until 5 oclock and we would then have the clambake.' CTB's ms. recollection.
1930?During the last period of his apprenticeship, the cut books at Gorham meant that he worked three days every two weeks. His parents at the time lived in Northampton, Mass. CTB would travel the hundred miles in a model-T Ford to work three days, and then drive back home. 'I must have made that trip 50 times.'
1930-1941worked for 11 years at Respro in Cranston making imitation leather 'Tufsta'

1941-44during World War II in defense work at Quonset Point Naval Air Station, Rhode Island; was aviation metalsmith first class.
12 Dec. 1945resumes employment at Gorham
19 Sept. 1954In an interview on 31 August 1997, CB told me that he used to drive Edward Drescher to and from work. One night (19th of Sept. 1954) Brandreth dreamed that he was repairing a road, tarring it over, when Drescher came along and tore up the road. When they looked in the hole they saw a coffin. When CB arrived at work the next day he learned that Drescher had died that night.

Brandreth won a raffle of Drescher's tools and succeeded him doing special-order work.
