| Three Cheshires at Gorham |
John Cheshire senior, born, 19 May 1861, was a bicycle mechanic who came from England to Providence to make his fortune. He was first employed by Gorham on 10 November 1904 at 15 cents per hour. By 2 April 190%5 he was 'watching' at night for $2 per day. He left Gorham on 30 December 1905 but was back in Department V5 on 30 March 1908 at a quarter an hour. On August 31 of that year his wage was cut to 22.5 cents. He left on 26 February 1910 but was back, in room M4 at the same rate, on the 28th. Let go on 12 May 1914 for 'lack of work,' Cheshire was back at Gorham in Department V on 8 February 1915; on 6 November that year he was let go again for lack of work. He returned, aged 64, a decade later, on 18 September 1925, to work in room M-2 (#55); he was laid off for 'no work' 10 December the same year; was back three months later, on 8 March 1926, in room P-5 (#11) at 40 cents an hour; and was gone a final time, for 'no work,' on 24 July 1926.
A search through Providence directories in his eflarly days has Cheshire listed as 'variety,' living at 105 Benedict Street; in 1906 and 1907 he was at 84 Gallup.
His son, John Cheshire Jr., was born, at Birmingham in 1887 (not on work card; info. from his daughter Virginia Leaper, 19 Feb. 1993). He apprenticed 29 July 1901 (three years before his father was employed by the Company) at a nickel an hour. His apprenticeship certificate, dated 22 July 1907, is owned by Mrs. Leaper.
John Cheshire, Jr., left Gorham on 19 February 1916; was 'reinstated' 7 April 1919, and left for good 10 May, only a month later, on his 'own accord.'
A younger brother, William A. Cheshire, was born, in England on 2 May 1892. He began his apprenticeship at Gorham on 16 October 1905 and was let go 21 February 1914 for 'lack of work.' He was back on 10 July 1915 and left 8 August 1916: 'wants to change,' says his personnel card. On August 21st of the same year he was back, in room M3, making 35-1/2 cents per hour. He left for the U. S. (R)Army on 3 July 1917, and returned to room M3 (#33) at 48 cents per hour on 31 March 1919. He left in 1921 (9 February) to take another position. Four years later, on 15 April 1925, he again turns up at Gorham, where he stayed until 20 November 1936, when he left for a final time to take 'another position.'

| 1923 | in England when his father's obituary was published. |
| | According to his entry in the 1905 Rhode Island Census, film of which was first made available 4 February 1998, Frank Codman was the second of the three sons. Born May 21st, 1873, he was thirty-two years old and had come to this counMtry with his family in 1891. Although resident in Providence for fourteen years, he was still a subject of the King of England. He lists himself as a designer in a silver manufactory, and was unemployed for two months of the census year. |
| | As an indication of Codman & Codman's design activities, Design Patent 37,388 of 4 April 1905 is a flatware design by Edwin E. Codman assigned to R. Blackington of North Attleboro, Massachusetts. |

'In 1887 Edward Holbrook, on his annual European tour, met William C. Codman, who was touted as a 'master of the Gothic,' and his son William Codman, who was working in the ecclesiastical field. Holbrook hired young Codman to come to Gorham to head up the ecclesiastical department of the Company' (Carpenter, Gorham Silver, pp. 141-142).
'During one of Mr. Holbrook's trips to Europe in 1886 accompanied by John H. Buck, writer and Curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he was introduced to William C. Codman and his son William Codman. At this time he persuaded the son, William Codman, to come to New York and join The Gorham Company in the Capacity of Ecclesiastical designer, which he did in the Spring of 1887. A few years later he was transferred to the factory in Providence where he has been a life-long associate. ...' (William Codman, History of Gorham silver (1935) typescript, p. 7).
William Codman boarded with his father during the years WCC lived in Providence. |

In April 1995 Brown University was offered three notebooks assembled by Curley. The first seems to be a portfolio of drawings of various silver objects and measures ca. 20 cm. square. The drawings include many teapots, but there are also flatware designs. Stylistically the designs hearken back to the 1840s.
The second is a scrapbook of photographs of work designed and modelled by Curley. Some are Gorham file photographs (some with targets removed). Work includes much ecclesiastical ware, very ornate, very Victorian, very much fifty years out of date. There is a lot of bronzework -- plaster models of architects' designs, as well as his own. The Bronze Harp was Curley's, as were the Q476 Boo-kends. Among silver identified as his are EOA-EOF Tea Set & Kettle, A9511 Tea Set, PLY Tea Set with PLZ Kettle, PHH Coffee, and KGV Trophy.
All of this work displays a very competent draughtsman and modeller and a very ordinary designer.
The third volume consists of designs, mostly derived from 17th and 18th century French sources. Again, they show an able hand and a limited mind.
The latter two notebooks were probably prepared when Curley was let go by Gorham, as there are photographs of World War I memorial plaques which he designed. They were probably part of his new portfolio to seek employment after 1920.
Curley seems never to have developed and his work may have contributed to the sterility of Gorham design in the first two decades of the twentieth century. |
