'In the passing of Mr. George Sauthof we lose one of the greatest repousse artists in the craft. Born, in Germany he came to this country very young, locating in New York, he entered the employ of the Tiffany Company and was there for many years. Starting with the Gorham Co. in 1889 his exceptional ability as a silver chaser was soon recognized and he was entrusted to execute some of the finest masterpieces in silver repousee. He was also a master in steel work, cutting dies and rolls for many of the beautiful borders used by the company today.

'The sympathies of his shop-mates are extended to his wife Mrs. Sauthof in her double bereavement losing as she did, her only daughter six weeks after the death of her husband.' Silver Tongue 3: 2, Dec. 1927, p. 5.

 Director of Design
Gorham was his first job. He was much younger than the senior designers but enough older than the yo'ung people brought in that he gravitated to the older group.

Some of that older group had a regular Friday-night dinner at the Providence Art Club to which Sebring was admitted.

In 1958 there was no Design Director (the job may have been open after Russell Price left in 1953). Dick Hopecraft was merchandise manager and oversaw the room; Warren (Larry) Lawrence was design manager.

The problem Gorham faced was that the older designers were superb technicians but set in their ways and not inclined to admit new ways. This had probably been fine-- even desirable-- when Gorham could sell all the traditional sterling they could make, but by 1960 customers wanted a new look. A series of bright young men and women were hired to liven things. Most moved on.

Sebring left because Textron kept sending executives with no preparation to Gorham. It took about two years for Sebring to break them in and then they would move along. Burr said he got tired of the process.

Christopher Monkhouse said he was the last of the great designers at Gorham.

Worked as a freelance designer.
