| 1864? | In an obituary probably written by his good friend John F. P. Lawton, discussions on art between Wilkinson and [Thomas] Buchanan Reed (1822-1872) were remembered vividly. These must have occurred during Reed's Civil War lecture circuits, during which he and James Edward Murdock would read Reed's patriotic poems (cf. DAB). Reed returned to Rome to live after the Civil War (he is best remembered today for his poem and painting on Phil Sheridan's ride). 'No one was a more interesting teller upon art subjects, none enjoyed the sflociety of artists more. His interviews with Buchanan Reed, when that great artist was visiting here, are remembered by many, especially by those who were so fortunately situated as to be able to engage, in a manner, in the conversation. Each enjoyed the society of the other, as true artists would be expected to do' (Draper, p. 132). |
